      FAQs

CAN WE MEET YOU BEFORE WE BOOK?

Yes! We meet all our couples by Zoom or Skype for an informal chat before booking. We talk over hopes and plans for your day so we can understand your needs and whether our approach is going to be the right fit for you.

      WHERE ARE YOU BASED?

We are currently based near Dunkeld, Perthshire in Scotland. We work across Scotland, from the Scottish Borders, north to the Trossachs National Park and up to the Highland & Islands; and from the west coast over to Perthshire, Cairngorms National Park and Aberdeenshire in the east. We also enjoy exploring beyond Scotland too—just let us know where you need us!

      DO YOU SHOOT ABROAD?

YES! Absolutely... Much as we love shooting in Scotland, we really enjoy capturing love stories further afield, too! We travel throughout the UK, Europe and worldwide. You can see an example of our destination work in this Big Sur California wedding. All of our destination wedding photography packages are inclusive of travel. Please get in touch and we can send you our brochure along with a customised quote.

WE ARE NOT COMFORTABLE IN FRONT OF A CAMERA!

Don’t worry! Our style is very laid back and casual. We will be capturing the day as it unfolds in an observational fashion. Every couple you see on our website and Instagram is a real couple, a real wedding. Almost all of them were worried about being awkward on camera, but on the day they were too busy having fun! We're very experienced at putting couples at ease—simply letting you be you. Read our testimonials for more about this.

      DO YOU SHOOT LARGER WEDDINGS?

We specialise in elopements and intimate weddings of up to 20 people. However, we do accept a small number of slightly larger weddings each year where we feel a strong connection with the couple and their ideas and plans for their day. We particularly enjoy travelling for destination weddings! If you are drawn to our style, and feel like we would be a good fit for your special day, feel free to get in touch , we would love to hear from you!

      DO YOU SHOOT FAMILY FORMALS?

We do take a small number family group photos and have a bit of fun with them. However, we try to limit these because we find that the most memorable images come from relaxed, spontaneous moments.

DO YOU SHOOT CANDIDS OF FRIENDS & FAMILY?

Of course! If you have guests with you, we will always capture images of them and their reactions and other spontaneous moments across the day — the quiet moments, laughter, dancing. You'll find examples in some of our wedding blogs.

HOW MANY IMAGES WILL WE GET?

We deliver between 350–500+ images for a full-day wedding, depending on the size and setting of your day. However, our main focus is to provide quality, not quantity.

      DO YOU OFFER PRINT ALBUMS?

We offer high quality fine art print albums as an extra service, produced via our partners QTAlbums and Folio Albums. These can be ordered through our online gallery platform. We also offer a bespoke album option where we curate and design just for you. This is available at the time of booking, or any time up to your wedding date. Ask us for more details when booking.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO RECEIVE OUR PHOTOS?

We share a good number of 'sneak peek' (preview) images within a few days of your wedding, to help you share your news. You can expect to receive your full gallery in 10–12 weeks, depending on the season. This isn't because your gallery alone takes 10–12 weeks to edit; once we send off sneak peeks, your gallery joins a queue of recent elopements/weddings, which we work through chronologically. For each of these we need to select the best from over 3500+ images, storyboard the day into a cinematic sequence, edit, fine-tune and then upload. During this time we will also be actively corresponding with 20+ couples, planning elopement days for multiple couples (helping them to find accommodation, celebrants and other suppliers, writing a timeline and checking conditions, access and travel for their days), extensive travelling (we average around 10 hours of driving per elopement), managing business admin, finding new secret locations, and also trying to take some time to ourselves and handle life admin (especially as we recently moved to the deep countryside—our chore list is much longer!)

Jaione & Tom | Isle of Skye elopement wedding

"I can’t recommend The Caryl’s enough. Even before we met them, we were in love with their style but once we met, we instantly knew that it couldn’t be anyone else. They helped us through the whole process, not just with the documents, but giving us several tips and recommendations about accommodation, suppliers and restaurants - and let me tell you, all were perfect! We are not a camera people, always feeling awkward when taking pictures but The day of the elopement they made everything smooth and easy and even if we had the craziest Scottish weather, it was the perfect day! I can’t wait to shoot with you in the future again, guys. Once again, thank you for all your help, support and amazing work."

We could tell after speaking with them that not only would they do an amazing job, but they would be a wonderful, safe pair(s) of hands and totally understood what we had envisaged. They are complete professionals, so lovely and down to earth making us feel comfortable, and the work speaks for itself! We couldn’t be happier with how the whole day went and of course how our photos turned out. We consider Katy and Jim friends and would have no hesitation in recommending them to absolutely anyone."

Christina & Alen | Boho wedding in Big Sur, California

"The Caryls moody, romantic yet light filled scenic images drew us in. Meeting Katy and Jim via facetime solidified our decision in choosing them to photograph our wedding. We quickly realized these two are the most friendly, talented team. Better yet, they were willing to adventure internationally to shoot our Big Sur Destination wedding, which, in itself, was an amazing gesture. Thanks to Katy and Jim, we not only had the opportunity to hang out with two awesome individuals during our wedding weekend, who were so caring and kind to our family and friends, but we also have the most stunning images and keepsakes to look back on for years. Our friends and family members commented on how friendly and great our photographers were; they definitely were one of the highlights discussed! We highly recommend The Caryls for their professionalism, their ease in making you feel comfortable in front of the camera, for their ability to get the most amazing scenic shots, for their moody and romantic documentary style, and most importantly, for their friendly and easy-going vibe. When we look at our photos, we are immediately taken back to the emotions we felt, as Katy and Jim have the ability to capture that intimacy and those moments so incredibly well."

Louise & Nathan | Cairngorms elopement

“Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for capturing our day so perfectly. We felt really emotional looking back through these images and are in awe of how beautiful they are. We had such a wonderful day, and you both played a really big part in that so again, thank you so much! We couldn’t have wished for anything more for our special day. We’ve decided to throw a small(ish!) party to celebrate with our friends and display some of our gallery. It’s been the hardest decision EVER trying to pick which ones as we don’t have room for them all! But that shows how much we love every single photograph as each tells the story of our perfect day. Everyone we’ve shown is in awe of how amazing they are and we share this each time we look back through! We would love to encourage more people to follow their hearts and elope like we did!”

Kiela & Derrick | Intimate Scottish Castle Wedding

"Wow - The Caryls are magic workers! Truly. Hire them, please. You will not regret it! We decided to get married in a Scottish castle with 31 of our closest friends and family. Initially we had talked about eloping in the highlands and I knew that I had to work with The Caryls: I was drawn to every single photo they took! When we decided that a small wedding was better for us, I reached out and was beyond thrilled when they said they were available and happy to work with us! We had a few zoom meetings with Katy and Jim and right away they made us feel at ease! We traveled from Washington State to Scotland, which of course were not without stress. But Katy and Jim helped to keep our stress away! The day of the wedding they were patient, kind, and being around them actually brought a calming sense during such a busy day. They worked so hard and the images they delivered to us brought us both to tears. Looking through them is like reliving the best day of our lives all over again. They truly captured every detail and every emotion we felt that day, in the most amazing way possible. We’re forever thankful for them!"

Nicole & Henry | Dunottar Castle elopement

"Words don't do this pair justice! We struggle to stop at calling them our favorite photographers.. as they were much more than that! The Caryls helped us with everything from ceremony location and accommodation recommendations to providing the best nerve-killing giggles on our day. Our photographs are just unreal, they captured every sniffle, laugh and flicker of love in the most poetic and artistic way. We were having a really hard time deciding where to elope when we stumbled upon their website and immediately felt at home. From the very first zoom call to saying goodbye the evening of our wedding, Katy and Jim were an absolute joy to be around!! We really and truly could not recommend them enough. If you want to be completely blown away by the way your day is captured, this is the photography couple of your dreams (they were certainly ours)!"

Kim & Chrissie | Isle of Skye elopement at Loch Coruisk

"We are so happy we chose The Caryls to photograph our wedding! Myself and my wife Chrissie opted for a private elopement ceremony up in the Isle of Skye, so we knew that when choosing our photographers they had to be very special. Not only would they be taking precious photos of a very special day, but they were also to be our witnesses and signing some very important papers. From the very start we felt so comfortable with Jim & Katy, and when it came to meeting them the day before our wedding we already felt like good friends! Jim & Katy went above and beyond what we expected. They know Skye extremely well and led us to the most beautiful spots on the island where all these amazing photographs were taken. Getting married at Loch Coruisk in the South of the island was their recommendation as well. We cannot thank them enough for what they have done for us. We felt very special and can only recommend choosing The Caryls to capture your very special day."
